Dr Alexander joined the Children's Hospital at Westmead in 2001 after 6 years away in the United States. He is originally from Melbourne, where he studied medicine at the University of Melbourne, and worked at the Royal Children's Hospital. He spent 6 years in Perth at the Princess Margaret Hospital completing his Fellowship in Pediatrics. During this time he worked in Kimberly as part of the pediatric service of the North-West.

He completed his pediatric nephrology training at the Children's Hospital in Boston. His research was done in the Division of Immunology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. He went on staff at the Massachusett's General Hospital for several years where his research interests were in tolerance and transplantation. In Sydney he plans to continue his research interest into the immunobiology of transplantation and tolerance.
