David graduated in Medicine from the University of NSW in 1994. He developed an interest in infection during a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in London in 1996 followed by 3 months working in the Solomon Islands. He returned to Sydney and began professional training in adult Infectious Diseases followed by Clinical Microbiology. During this training he completed a Masters in Medical Science (Clinical Epidemiology) through the University of Newcastle.
David was appointed as a Staff Specialist in Medical Microbiology at the Childrens Hospital at Westmead in 2006. His interests include the prophylaxis and rapid diagnosis of invasive fungal infections in neuropaenic patients, the detection and control of antibiotic resistance in hospitals including appropriate antibiotic use, and the application of Clinical Epidemiology to the validation, selection and reporting of diagnostic tests. He is married with two sons, and his main regret is his inability to bowl a decent outswinger.
