Ruth graduated with a BA at Macquarie University in 1974, and after working in diverse fields, including music administration, running patient activity groups in the Renal Unit at Prince Henry Hospital, and becoming a parent, she completed the Graduate Diploma of Library Science at the Ku-ring-gai College of Advanced Education in 1991. She worked for nine years as a medical librarian before joining the Cochrane Renal Group in August 2000.

She completed a Master of Arts, Information at the University of Technology, Sydney in 2004, using her involvement in the Cochrane Collaboration’s diagnostic test accuracy systematic reviews initiative as the basis for her practical assignment. Currently, her major project is the development of the Cochrane Register of Diagnostic Test Accuracy Studies, and she also assists authors with search strategies for DTA reviews.
