Yuan joined the Centre for Kidney research in July 2003. Her work involves gene transfer and gene therapy by retroviral infection for renal diseases on animal models.

Yuan has studied in China, Singapore and Australia. In China Yuan worked as a Gastroenterologist, then she did a Masters in Singapore while working in the Hepatology Diagnostic Lab, Dept. of Medicine, National University of Singapore. Since arriving in Australia Yuan completed a PHD while working at the Retroviral Genetics Laboratory Westmead Millennium Institute, University of Sydney. Just before coming to the Centre for Kidney research Yuan did a year as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Science Food and Horticulture at the University of Western Sydney.
