ARDAC [Antecendants for Renal Disease in Aboriginal Children]

Aim

We are undertaking a screening study of 1000 Aboriginal and 1000 non-Aboriginal primary school children in NSW

  • to determine how commonly Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal primary school children have blood and protein in their urine.
  • to investigate whether these numbers vary between urban, rural and remote communities
  • to determine whether there are any associations between these kidney disease markers and the children's height, weight and blood pressure levels.

Background

Increasingly information is being sort about early markers of kidney disease, such as blood and protein in the urine, in Aboriginal people in the hope that early detection and intervention will reduce the very high incidence of kidney failure requiring dialysis treatment found in Aboriginal people, especially in remote communities.

Studies in remote Aboriginal communities, with large number of adults with kidney failure, have detected high numbers of children with blood and protein in their urine. We do not know if Aboriginal children in the southern states, where about 50% of Aboriginal children live, are more likely to have blood and protein in their urine compared with non-Aboriginal children.
