About the Centre for Kidney Research

Chronic kidney disease is a leading contributor to mortality and morbidity globally. One in three Australians are at an increased risk of kidney disease; and end-stage kidney disease accounts for more than 10% of deaths. Compared with the general population, people with chronic kidney disease are also at higher risk of serious comorbid conditions including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes; and severely impaired quality of life.

Our clinical research program at the Centre for Kidney Research (CKR) is broad-ranging and primarily aims to improve outcomes in children and adults with or at risk of kidney disease. We conduct and implement high-priority research in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care of people with or at risk of chronic kidney disease and related conditions. Our research and teaching expertise spans epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, qualitative methods, and evidence synthesis; which we apply in chronic kidney disease and other health conditions.

The Clinical Group of the Centre for Kidney Research is located at Kids Research, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead; and is affiliated with the Sydney School of Public Health, The University of Sydney. The CKR (Clinical Group) sits within the Nephrology department of the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. The clinical research group involves approximately 50 multidisciplinary researchers, clinicians, and administration staff. The laboratory research group based in the KRI has 8 students and scientists, and is focussed on immunology and genetics of kidney disease and transplantation.

The majority of our work is supported by the government through the National Health and Medical Research Council, hospital and university funding, philanthropic organisations, and community donations.
